How to Care for Your Braided Rugs: Tips from Allyson’s Place
Here at Allyson’s Place, we know a well-loved rug is more than just floor covering — it’s the cozy foundation of your home. Whether it’s tucked under your kitchen table or softening your entryway, braided rugs bring warmth, texture, and charm to every corner of your space.
To keep them looking their best for years to come, we’ve put together our favorite care tips. Don’t worry — no fancy equipment required. Just a little routine TLC goes a long way!
🧹 Vacuuming Your Rug
Use a strong suction vacuum (without a beater brush!) to clean your rug regularly. Beater brushes can pull at the braids and wear them down over time. For smaller rugs, a handheld vacuum or upholstery attachment works great.
Tip: A quick shake outdoors helps loosen dust and crumbs between deep cleans.
🧼 Spot Cleaning & Spills
Blot spills right away using a clean, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing. Use mild, bleach-free detergent and cool water to gently lift the stain. For bigger messes or deeper cleaning, we recommend professional rug cleaning.
🔁 Rotate & Flip for Longer Life
Our braided rugs are reversible, and flipping them helps even out wear. Rotate every few months in high-traffic areas to extend the life and look of your rug.
📦 Unrolling Your Rug
When your rug first arrives, it may need 36–48 hours to fully settle. Unroll it and let it lay flat before placing furniture on top. If needed, gently roll it in the opposite direction or smooth wrinkles by hand or with a carpet tube.
🌞 Fading in Sunlight
A little fading over time is natural, especially in sunny spaces. Flipping and rotating your rug helps even out the exposure.

🧺 Rug Pads Are a Must
To protect your investment, we always recommend using a rug pad. Pads keep your rug in place, prevent slipping, and add a bit of cushioned comfort underfoot. They also help reduce wear and protect your floor — especially important on vinyl or wood surfaces. Bonus: rug pads can even help prevent color transfer from the rug backing.
🌱 What’s a Rug Sprout?
Occasionally you may see a thread or “sprout” sticking out — don’t worry, it’s not a defect! It’s just part of the braided construction. Simply trim the sprout even with the rug using scissors. Never pull.
🧵 Braid Separation Happens — Here’s How to Fix It
Over time, and with heavy use, some rugs may experience small braid separations. This is normal and easily fixed. Use a needle and strong thread to gently sew the separated braids back together. Always sew at your own risk, or consider a local upholstery or rug repair service if you’re unsure.
To prevent stress on the rug stitching, avoid dragging furniture or pointed chair legs across it. If you spot loose threads, trim them — never tug. Small irregularities in color or weave are all part of the handcrafted, homespun charm.
A Little Love Goes a Long Way
Our rugs are made to be lived on and loved — and with just a bit of care, they’ll be part of your home for years to come.
