What is Primitive Home Decor?

What is Primitive Country Home Décor?

Ask 5 different people to describe Primitive Country Décor and you will get 5 different answers.  This is because “Primitive” can describe many different ways and definitions are not unwavering.  Some of the words most often used are:

Simple, Rustic, Charming, Cozy, Folksy,

Americana, Farmhouse, Homey,

Un-refined, Worn, Welcoming

Primitive country décor is style is characterized with the use of folk art items that stress a rough and simple look, darker earthly colors, and natural fabrics.

It makes use of worn items, which look as if they have been passed down from generation to generation.

Focusing on comfort and convenience, décor items associated with the trend were everyday items used back in the “Good Old Days” (idealized life in small towns in America, around the turn of the century).  A time when reducing, reusing, and recycling was a way-of-life, not just a slogan.  Take something old and make it new or useful again.

If you like a homey and welcoming feel, primitive country décor is definitely for you.

The main ingredients to create your own primitive country room are:

  • Braided rugs
  • Plaid, check and natural fabrics used in quilts, throws, pillows and window treatments.
  • Primitive symbols such as crows, stars, willow trees, or salt-box house are a very common theme.
  • Lighting such as candles or lamps made to look old.

Below are some images with links to galleries to view some decorating ideas.  I hope you enjoy browsing and are inspired to create a space that reflects your primitive style.
